In times when companies are facing constant changes, the management of a plethora of different projects and programs within a company becomes even more challenging.
Companies have to take difficult decisions: How do you identify those projects that ensure the greatest corporate success while at the same time reflecting strategic corporate planning? Which evaluation criteria could measure the risk of different projects? And how can these projects be coordinated in the best possible way? How can resources be used efficiently?
Especially when a company is faced with a lot of projects and programs (or company size) it makes sense for companies to introduce portfolio management.
Portfolio management has a long-term perspective and controls projects and programs at a strategic level with a view to implement corporate goals. This means selecting the right projects in order to implement the corporate strategy in the best possible way, and can sometimes mean deliberately not starting or discontinuing projects if they do not deliver sufficient benefits.
